FORMULA FOR THE CORRECT FIN SIZE FOR YOUR BOARD
This is the formula I use for the size and position of my fin.
For every foot of board length I use 1″ of fin height.
An example, for a 6’3″ surfboard a 6.25″ single fin should suit.
As described in the Dynamics of a Fin, base size and height effect a fins performance and hold.
By moving the fin forward in the box, it will move the pivot point forward and loosen the tail.
If the fin is moved back it will create more hold in the tail.
By making small adjustments to the position of a fin you will find the right position that suits your surfing.
Larger waves may require a larger fin.
Regarding position, start with the fin in the centre of the box, I use the base length of the fin plus 1/2″ to position the back of the fin, I surf heavier on my back foot.
If you are a front foot surfer you may need to start the fin position further forward.
If you are using side fins, reduce the size of the centre fin in relation to the size of the side fins until you feel the amount of hold and turn you like.
Try different fin positions until you find the one that suits your surfing and the waves you are riding.
Don’t be afraid to experiment, after all if you fall off, it’s only water.
